Gaming has, for decades now, been a large part of popular culture, rising to become the billion-dollar industry it is today. It has also been in a constant state of evolution. Currently, we are seeing the intersection of gaming with blockchain technology thanks to things like GameFi.
The latest technological advancement the world is looking to is Web3 and the metaverse, which are primed to change the ways in which we interact with the digital world. Gaming, in particular, is bound to be a big part of the metaverse because gaming is a concept in which virtual ecosystems are already accepted.
With all this evolution, however, there are a few glitches to address. One of these is the fragmentation of the metaverse gaming space. In most cases, different games and ecosystems exist on different platforms. This means that gamers usually can only invest their time and resources into one game universe at a time and if that one fails, all their efforts have been lost.
This type of fragmentation, however, is not very sustainable. If we are to achieve the truly united web3 world that we are looking to, more unity must be achieved. The concept has already been seen in the crypto space thanks to cross-chain protocols and the same must be done for the metaverse gaming space.
Luckily, it seems this is already on its way thanks to gDEX, a new project that is working to create interoperability across the metaverse as it expands.
How gDEX Works
Starting development in July 2020, gDEX addresses the fragmentation and walled garden problem in the metaverse by offering its own platform that acts as a unified GameFi interoperability layer that functions across multiple metaverses. Using its suite of no-coding needed chain agnostic tools, which includes its NFT open standard providing interoperability across the metaverse and a decentralized NFT gamer ID in the form of the metaverse passport, users can sync their activities across different metaverses with ease.
All their activities across metaverses will be attached to their metaverse passport and this will help them maximize their efforts. gDEX is not only for creators and developers but gamers as well, who all make up important parts of the gaming ecosystem.
While the management of gDEX will be releasing more details in the future, some of the tools to be attached to the platform have been released. These will include the Metaverse Passport, the Cross-chain guild management tool, GameFi missions, staking for access, a game & guild discovery zone, a community marketplace, and so on.
All these tools, in one way or another, work to create a better experience for users. The creator space, for example, will let creators from all niches connect and share experiences and resources.
The guild management tool can level up the way guilds are managed as a form of scalable business, while also being used to better navigate the different games. In the game and guild discovery zone, users can find new metaverse experiences and in this way, gDEX helps them to not only connect the metaverses they use but find metaverses to use in the first place.
All these, ultimately, are tied to the users’ metaverse passport that unifies their digital experience.
Why We Need Interoperability
What gDEX is doing is not just creating another metaverse platform. It is, essentially, solving one of the metaverse’s most pressing issues before it becomes bigger. For the average person who is interested in metaverses, the fragmentation and loss of value and use of NFTs outside each and every platform poses major issues.
If they sign up on different metaverse platforms to play, their efforts, and thus their rewards, are split across several places with limited cohesion. The NFTs they purchase are siloed between metaverses and games and are non transferrable and lose all value. For those who are not particularly passionate about the metaverse just yet, this could prove to be a major deterrence.
If gDEX can fix the hurdle effectively, it will open up the metaverse to those who are already in it and to others as well. The result of this will be greater financial and social benefit for everyone who uses the metaverse in the future.
As J.D. Salbego, the founder and CEO of gDEX, puts it, “The opportunities for enriched experiences and creations, Play to Earn gaming, and exciting new professional careers within such environments will be extensive. We can only glimpse at this point in time, but they will be very significant as virtual economies along with their metaverse-inhabiting communities become an all-encompassing part of people’s lives.”
