Amazon Inc. may soon let users pay for products using cryptocurrencies as the eCommerce giant is looking to add a blockchain and digital currency expert to its payment team.
The company recently posted a job listing seeking to hire an experienced digital currency and blockchain product lead to work closely in the payment acceptance and experienced team and, therefore, to help the company develop its blockchain and digital currency strategy and product roadmap.
This suggests that the firm could be taking a more serious look at cryptocurrencies and hints at a possible future integration of such assets on the site.
“You will leverage your domain expertise in Blockchain, Distributed Ledger, Central Bank Digital Currencies and Cryptocurrency to develop the case for the capabilities which should be developed, drive the overall vision and product strategy, and gain leadership buy-in and investment for new capabilities,” the job posting stated.
The product lead would collaborate with teams across Amazon, including Amazon Web services (AWS)- a cloud arm of Amazon, to build the roadmap for the launch strategy, technical strategy and capabilities, and customer experience. AWS currently provides a managed blockchain service.
A company spokesperson revealed that Amazon is inspired by the innovation taking place in the crypto sector and examines what it could look like within the firm. Yet, at present, Amazon does not accept crypto assets as payments yet.
Growing Interest in Crypto
The latest opening comes five months after rumours started that Amazon was developing the groundwork of a new digital currency to use in its platforms and marketplaces.
In February 2021, Amazon posted a job listing as it looked for developers and engineers to help the company prepare a unveil of the ‘digital currency” project in Mexico. During that time, the company searched for a leader to help the company launch a new payment product beginning with Mexico as the initial launch nation.
The new digital currency payment will enable customers to convert their fiat currencies to digital currencies, which they can use to buy online goods and services. The company posted the job in October 2020 but updated it in February.
